Blacksite: Area 51 Demo Review

Home : Games : Articles

Blacksite makes good use of the Unreal Engine 3, resulting in those stellar graphics and particle effects.  The game's physics engine looks to be spot-on as well.  Shot glass shatters just as you'd expect it to and explosions include not only breathtaking balls of flame but rain debris all over the environment just as if it were the real thing.  And the enemies are truly frightening.  These are not little green or gray men armed with anal probes.  These interstellar baddies look like nothing you've seen before and are huge.  They also move with incredible speed.  While the baddies offered up in the demo are not that much of a challenge, we get a glimpse of a likely boss battle participant that will probably take a combination of skill and immense firepower to take down.

I sure hope this guy is on our side.

Features being touted by Midway but not really shown off in this demo include a unique twist on the squad leadership system in which your actions as a leader will have a direct effect on your team's morale and battle worthiness.  If you lead well your squad wil rally behind you when it counts, but if you're a lame duck leder your team will have low morale which will effect their aim and their fatigue as well as their will to fight.  Drivable vehicles will be available in at least the campaign mode (no word on whether they'll show up in multiplayer) and will include Humvees, ATVs, and civillian autos.

Mutiplayer modes are set to include traditional and team deathmatch, capture the flag and two modes unique to the game: "Human Vs. Reborn" (the original Area 51 featured a similar mode) and "Siege" in which teams attempt to capture each other's members on the way to controlling territory.

Again, the demo is far too short to make any real judgments about the game which is due to release sometime in the third quarter of 2007, but it is worth a look to see what Midway has in store for us with this new FPS.  And there's not a Nazi in sight!
