Blacksite: Area 51 Demo Review

The aliens have landed and they're not the cute little ETs we thought they would be.

First Person Shooters may be a dime a dozen and on sale cheap these days, but there's no denying the popularity of the format.  Why else are there so damned many of them anyway?  Continuing the recent and thankfully growing trend of releasing FPS titles that have little or nothing to do with the Second World War (how many times can you fire a Gerrand into a German soldier and then steal his dropped Krieg anyway?), Midway has just released the demo for it's new FPS; Blacksite: Area 51 on Xbox 360.  Blacksite is the sequel to the 2005 title Area 51 which appeared on PC, Xbox, and PS2.

Sure this looks like it could be just any shooter, but he's not hiding from Nazis or terrorists.

Blacksite is not a rehash of the previous title, however.  Gone is the voice acting by David Duchovney and Marilyn Manson telling a creepy story of alien takeover and one man's slow transformation from human soldier into... something else.  Instead Blacksite is more traditional and incorporated elements of games like Rainbow Six: Vegas and even Gears of War to get its point across.

In the all-too-short demo (you'll reach the end of it in maybe five minutes) you'll be in charge of a military squad who is responding to trouble and arriving a little too late.  The demo will guide you through the basics of aiming, shooting, and issuing squad commands as you play and it's all basic enough to come fairly naturally.  What this demo is trying to show off more than anything is the way this game looks which is fantastic.
