The Games of Summer

Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow - Sony Computer Entertainment, for PSP; September 4

A sequel to last year’s portable revival of the Syphon Filter franchise, Logan’s Shadow looks to bring back the high production values and intuitive control scheme of Dark Mirror for another go-around that may just break Syphon Filter into the big time again.  Dark Mirror featured the best third-person shooting control scheme yet seen on Sony’s handheld, with fluid movement, inventory management, and a targeting system that was easy to use but required plenty of skill.

The series that proved 3D shooters could be a blast on PSP is back.

Logan’s Shadow brings back secret operative Gabe Logan in an all-new story.  Online multiplayer will return, as will an enhanced version of the slick cover system from the original game, now with the ability blind-fire from cover.  Add in another wave of worthwhile unlockables, new God of War-style button-press minigames, and a host of new environments (including some underwater missions) and the PSP looks to have a marquee third-person shooter late this summer.

Mass Effect - BioWare, for Xbox 360/ September 4

BioWare is back with another epic space RPG this summer, only this time it’s not Knights of the Old RepublicMass Effect takes place in a sci-fi universe where the human race has only recently joined the galactic elite.  Taking control of a fully customizable main character named Shepherd, players will travel the galaxy and unravel a traditionally grand plot at their own leisure.

Mass Effect promises epic RPG action in outer space.

The branching dialogue trees include tons of optional conversations with NPCs in typical RPG fashion, but little touches like conversations between NPCs and the ability cut off characters you are speaking with help immerse the player in Mass Effect’s world.  The combat is a smooth balance between real-time action and turn-based tactics, which will change depending on which class you select for your version of the main character.  The Xbox’s biggest RPG since Oblivion will hit in early September.
