E3 2007: The Big Three
Home : Games : Articles
So those are the slam dunks (Seriously, I will be pissed if any of the games mentioned above are less than stellar), but what about the question marks? The games that you just aren't sure about. The two games you can categorize like that are Killzone 2 and Heavenly Sword. I know, I know, Heavenly Sword looks insane, but what do we really know about it? The most description I've ever heard is "Goddess of War" which is good I guess, but I want firm details, and I have a feeling that they won't be at E3 this year either.
Each time an event comes around the response to Heavenly Sword not being shown is "it wasn't quite ready. Here's a 2 minute demo." which is ridiculous. I'm expecting them to dodge talking much about it, but they'll casually mention a date for it (I'd be shocked if it's 2007). Now Killzone is where things get interesting. We've had previous experience with this franchise and, while it's a competent shooter, a Halo killer it is not. Once again, Sony is putting an unfair burden on this game: the burden of measuring up to the most powerful 4 letters in the whole of gaming. Though I'm betting it'll show decently; it may not be Halo, but it looks pretty freaking good. Hopefully, Killzone won't strangle itself under all the talk of being the PS3's Halo, but it's turning out that way already. Hopefully, the beta will release sometime around E3 so we can decide for ourselves.
On the handheld front, Sony might also have a few tricks left up their sleeve. The devastating duo of GoW: Chains of Olympus and Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core will lead the charge in terms of software, and they will be fan-freakin'-tastic. Loco Roco 2 will be announced, though if that's for PSP or PS3 remains to be seen (it'll be a straight-up PSP game). Expect to see some new info on the Oblivion game that's been MIA for a while, but don't get too excited. I don't think it's going to be impressive at all. It's a long shot, but we might see some more news on the Grand Turismo for PSP. Let's see... how 'bout some hardware predictions? PSP "lite" to be announced; slimmer, better battery life, and at the price point of $149.99 (very easily could include some form of flash memory, which would be ideal). There you go: if that doesn't make you excited about Sony's PS3/PSP lineup, I don't know what will.

Holy. Crap.
Nintendo
The extreme mystery that is the Wii and it's success makes it near impossible to predict just what will happen come E3. For now, let's focus on what we know for sure: Mario Galaxy, Metroid 3 and Smash Bros. Brawl is the all star lineup, and seeing as 2 out of the three had demos last year, it's safe to say they will be playable this year too, though Smash Bros. has been confirmed not to be playable at E3. Major bummer, I know. They'll all be trumpeted as 2007 releases, despite the fact that one of them (Smash Bros.) will slip to '08. The recently announced "WiiWare" will more than likely be shown and fully explained, with some good software demoed that will debut with it. From there, everything slips into a grey area. There's a bunch of things that have been talked about, but not in any official sense. But honestly, aren't grey areas the most fun?
Some predictions are easier to come by than others, though. Like, it's not hard to think that Animal Crossing for Wii might finally become official. It's been teased forever, but this time it should get shown. Mario Kart on Wii would be another obvious choice (another game that's been rumored for quite a while), though I doubt it'll be playable. It's also most definitely a 2008 title. I'm fairly certain that a large emphasis will be placed on Mii heavy non-games, but the actual titles that may come of that are, again, extremely vague. Miyamoto has talked at length about a Wii fitness game, so I expect to see that, as well as the rumored Wii music game. It could either be a full game of the orchestra tech demo shown last year, or Nintendo could make it Rock Band-esque and bundle several different instruments onto the disc (2 Wiimotes+Drumming=incredible).

Don't be surprised if the best Wii title there is the one without waggle.
