DEMO REVIEW
The Gangland demo features a lot of gameplay...if you have the patience to get to it.

You play a mobster who is sent on various missions for “the family.” You’ll extort shop owners, force businesses into partnerships, rub out rival mobsters, and even drive around the streets of Little Italy spraying enemies (and innocent citizens, if you want) with drive-by gunfire.

Unfortunately, your worst enemy in Gangland is not rival gang leaders - it’s the camera control! You’ll spend as much time adjusting your view to see the action, as you will engaging in the action itself. It doesn’t help that you can’t adjust the camera while the game is paused.

In fact, you can’t issue any orders at all while paused, which strongly de-emphasizes the real-time tactical angle of Gangland and makes it feel more like an action game.

Other frustrations include time-limited missions (not all of them, thankfully) and the inability to save your game.

The game saves your progress at the end of a Conquest, but those contain so many missions that they’re difficult to complete in one sitting.

Also, your main mobster has the awesome ability to throw dynamite, but he’s not smart enough to quit throwing it when his allies run in to engage his target in close combat.

Still, Gangland can get addictive. Mission objectives are varied, plus you can go off on your own and shake down area merchants for extra cash and bonuses.

You get to play with three different types of ammo (in addition to the dynamite). And when Big Mamma joins your team, get ready for some serious violence!
