Doctors and addiction experts have refused to designate gaming addiction as a mental illness akin to alcoholism, stating that it is not yet clear if video games are addictive.
Experts suggested that more study is needed before excessive use of video games could be considered to be a mental illness, further stating that,
"There is nothing here to suggest that this is a complex physiological disease state akin to alcoholism or other substance abuse disorders, and it doesn't get to have the word addiction attached to it," said Dr Stuart Gitlow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine in New York.
The psychiatrist group concluded that if the science backs it up, it could be considered for inclusion in the next 'diagnostic manual', which will be published in 2012.
The group also commented that use of video games is usually harmless and actually helps with some disorders like autism.
