Yet another politician is jumping on the "games will be the death of our innocent children" bandwagon.
Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino is the latest political leader to make a move toward banning the sale of violent video games to minors. Entertainment Software Association spokesman Dan Hewitt noted the industry has faced and beaten these types of challenges numerous times before.
"Every time states have tried to restrict access to First Amendment protected material, it has been considered unconstitutional," Hewitt told the Boston Herald. Predictable battle lines are being drawn, with politicians lining up behind Menino and the gaming industry echoing Hewitt's sentiments.
Louisiana legislators attempted a similar proposal in 2006, but District Court Judge James Brady ordered a permanent injunction to block the statute being implemented. In his ruling he stated games should receive the same First Amendment protection that the "best of literature" does. Jack Thompson is somewhere booking a flight to Boston.
