The French game maker is taking a new step in its long-running partnership with the famous espionage author.
Ubisoft announced today it has purchased the rights to Tom Clancy's name for games and related products for an undisclosed amount. Clancy will receive additional unspecified payments in each of Ubisoft's next two fiscal years, it said in the release.
Clancy's games have sold every bit as well as the novels bearing his name. Franchises like Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six have consistently placed among the industry's best-sellers and generally best reviewed. Clancy games make up an estimated third of Ubisoft's profits annually. Since 2000 the company has published 18 Clancy-themed games that have sold more than 50 million copies.
Rainbow Six Vegas sold more than 1.6 million games just in the United States and its highly anticipated sequel is expected to do even better. As far as GWN can tell, there is no truth to the rumor that as part of the deal Tom Clancy is now known as "Rayman."
