WoW Character Transfers Begin

A system to enable paid (in real money no less) character transfers in World of Warcraft has been launched, inciting much controversy. So far only 12 servers support the feature.

First, Blizzard made the announcement that they intended to launch paid transfers, then people thought they had renegged, but now it's official. Blizzard officially launched the paid transfer system today for in-game characters.

For $25, you can move a character to any other realm, as long as:

You don't transfer from PvE to PvP servers
You have not made a character transfer for the past 60 days
You pay the $25 fee
Your server is on the eligible server list of 12 servers

Considering there are 51 servers in total, this leaves most players unable to use the service. More servers (also reffered to as 'realms') will be supported in the near future.

Currently supported servers are:

Altar of Storms
Argent Dawn
Arthas
Dalaran
Demon Soul
Illidan
Magtheridon
Spirestone
Stormrage
Turalyon
Warsong
Zul'jin

Apparently there will also be restrictions on which races can move to which realms, so as to keep race majorities in check. Blizzard are obviously trying to prevent one server from being overtaken by the Horde, for example. All servers above are Horde and Alliance eligible only.
