Ubisoft Gets Behind the Driver’s Wheel

Atari sells the rights of the Driver series to Ubisoft for a reported $24 Million.

The Driver games hold a special place in the hearts of people who played the first two incarnations on the PSOne. With the release of Driv3r and Driver: Parallel Lines on the current gen consoles, the series seemed to have lost a lot of the steam that it originally had way back in 1999. However, Ubisoft seems to be looking to revitalize the franchise by purchasing the rights to the series from Atari along with the majority of the assets of Reflections, the game developers behind the most recent Driver games. Atari’s CEO, Bruno Bonnel, had this to say:

"The Atari name has been synonymous with innovation since the beginning of interactive entertainment. Over the years, we have created and nurtured some of the industry's most successful franchises and we will continue to do so. We are focusing the energy of the Company on a select number of franchises in order to optimize their impact among consumers and increase shareholder value. In the driving category, we consider Test Drive our key franchise which will require more resources and attention to build it as a landmark of its genre."

Ubisoft is most well known for their involvement in the Splinter Cell series, Prince of Persia, Rayman, and many other AAA titles. Perhaps this new turn of events will be just what the Driver franchise needs to bring it back to its glory days.
