Pitching, on the other hand, is just boring. The pitcher gets a menu of pitches, selects one, and throws. There is no way to subtly alter the pitch or work against an individual batter with, again, any kind of personal touch of finesse. Of course, since no one can hit much of anything, it doesn’t really matter.

No MLB or MLBPA license means generic uniforms and stadiums.

When UBO launched it was intended to be a $7.95 per month subscription game. Probably because they realized no one would pay those rates to play, publisher Netamin has opted to keep the game subscription free, but charge for certain types of leagues and tournaments. Gosh, thanks.

Players level up through completing training camps that work on hitting, pitching, and fielding as well as through playing games. Of course you don’t run an actual team in UBO like you would in most baseball sims, instead you are merely a player on a team. There are pick-up games and the aforementioned leagues for pay, so finding a group of players you can work with is vital. It's tough enough to get four friends together at the same time for online sessions of a game like Battlefield 2 or SOCOM, imagine the difficulty in getting eight others (at least) who all agree to play specific positions (including snoozers like LF) for the two or more hours it takes to muddle through an online baseball game.

The batting interface is clunky at best.

Since it’s a free download and basic play is still free, UBO may be worth the download for baseball fans who want to try something different, but do it fast because I don’t see too many people latching onto this one and it will likely be gone before you know it.

Highs
Very good graphics; a new type of game that may be successful in the future.

Lows
Poor controls; a slower version of an already slow game.

Final Verdict
Ultimate Baseball Online is an interesting idea, but technical and control issues hold it back from being any more than a temporary curiosity.
