The problems in this game stem simply from the fact that, even for a kids’ game, it is just too easy and way too short. The puzzles are overly simplistic, the ending comes very suddenly and very abruptly, and the mystery is none too mysterious. There is also no incentive whatsoever for the player (even a ten-year old girl) to play through the game a second time.
Why do I keep expecting to see a little mermaid and a singing crab?
If you’re a parent looking for a very family friendly PC title to get your pre teens in front of, you could do worse than Creature of Kapu Cave, I suppose. There is a slight educational element to the game and it’s pretty enough to hold some kids’ interest for a little while. You could also, however, do much better. Take that twenty bucks to your local B. Dalton or Barnes and Noble and get your kids a handful of the actual Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys books. Don’t they spend a little too much time in front of the PC playing games on the Nickelodeon site anyway?
Review by Michael Triggs.
“What is your name? What is your quest? What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?”
Highs
Good graphics; interesting characters; the inclusion of the Hardy Boys will raise interests for kids who have played the other fourteen games in the series.
Lows
Overly simplified puzzles and gameplay; an incredibly short game; even young kids will probably get bored easily.
Final Verdict
Fans of the Nancy Drew books and games may enjoy this, but there are much better ways to spend twenty bucks on your kids.
