Evidence: The Last Ritual

Prepare yourself for a different kind of thriller game.

Have you ever noticed how extremely similar most detective games are? They start out with a nice, long, dramatic introduction spelling out the who’s-who in the hierarchy of the Police Department. They establish which one is the good cop, which one is the bad cop. They all start out the same, run through the plot the same, and in most cases end the same. The cops bag the bad guy, the guy gets the girl just in the knick of time, and they all go home happy.

Prepare yourself for something different, something that is beyond creepy, and something that puts you in the front row of a killer’s maniacal spree. This is Evidence: The Last Ritual.

One of the unfortunate souls that is used by The Phoenix in a game of cat and mouse.

From the creators of MISSING come this game where you are an investigator helping to solve the mysteries that surround the infamous killer "The Phoenix". The story picks up a few years after the disappearance of Jack Lorski. On October 8th, Arnaud Ivan received a strange black CD-ROM from the killer. Because the contents were so hard to understand the Police Department decided to go public with the information to try to recruit people who could help make sense of the seemingly random information on the disc. Using the contents from the disc the end result was a video game. From there you team up with the ICPA (International Committee for the Phoenix’s Arrest) to investigate the kidnapping of Jack, which then turns into a murder investigation.

Example of one of the puzzles presentations that you are faced with solving.

The only clues you have to go by are the game and the bizarre puzzles sent to you by the killer himself. He taunts you with his erratic behavior and gestures. Some puzzles require you to write down numbers and letters and decipher them to move on, others entail some internet sleuthing.

The glorious (and creepy) thing about the game is that there are many, many websites devoted strictly to the game, others play off of well known websites such as CNN.com that help add to the realism of the game. Sometimes it was hard to know if the site you were visiting was real or fiction. I hope you like to do a lot of reading, because that is the core of this game. There are no fancy cut-scenes or dazzling graphics… just puzzles and text with a very eerie storyline.

Is this creepy or what? Good luck solving this one.

Besides the lack of animations and pretty much anything you’ve come to expect in a video game, it still proves to be quite entertaining. Some of the puzzles are ambiguous in what they expect you to do, rather relying on your investigating senses to figure out what needs to be done. After all, if you were a real investigator I doubt the killer would leave clear directions on how to solve the problem, now would they?
