In one of the first puzzles you are presented with a video loop of a girl sitting on a floor. She has some letters tattooed on her forearm and by inputting them correctly into the fill-in-the-blanks slot she will reveal another portion of her body and the puzzle continues. In a following puzzle, the only clue I get is the mentioning of a historic castle. With nothing else to go on I did a Google search that revealed the desired information. With Evidence you need to rely on your instincts to help you solve the crime and get to the bottom of things. Don’t spend your time looking for levers to pull or curtains to yank open, because they aren’t there.
Some of the clues are so abstract just figuring out what is expected of you can make you pull your hair out.
To further evolve the storyline you get emails from other characters, some are from other ICPA investigators such as Kristin, a fellow investigator. Some come directly from the killer himself! Here is one of the letters I received from Kristin:
"The Phoenix is thrilled to announce Jack's death to us! It's disgusting. But it gives me all the more energy to help capture him. Personally, I heard about Jack's death in July through a friend who knew him. I was saddened to get the news, as I participated in the first investigation when he was kidnapped and then freed three years ago.
In case you missed the news, you can find an article on the circumstances surrounding his death on the Liberation website by typing "Jack Lorski" into their search engine.
Take care,
Kristin"
This is Jack, the man whose murder sends you on a wild chase to find his killer and to not go insane in the process.
This all proves to be a very interesting experience. The game isn’t the kind that would pacify a hardcore action game lover. It’s designed more for a person that enjoys getting to the bottom of things. The puzzles can sometimes be extremely hard to figure out, but the overall storyline is also extremely compelling. The use of internet investigating and receiving letters in your personal email was quite a shock.
Some images scare the bejesus out of you if you play this at 2am in a dark room.
Of all the nice things I have to say, there were some things with the game that were frustrating. The puzzles were sometimes a little too hard to figure out or even understand where to begin, forcing me to look up a walkthrough for the game. Others gave you almost no indication of what is expected of you, and the extreme amount of searching the internet for clues can seem somewhat tedious. I often found myself getting off track by visiting websites that had absolutely nothing to do with the game. Without knowing whether or not the website is dedicated to the game, you may feel that you are on the right track and then discover that the past 30 minutes spent looking up old Latin poems has nothing to do with the game.
I never did figure this one out.
In summary, if you are looking for something new that will creep you out and present you with a new way of gaming then I would recommend Evidence: The Last Ritual. If you are in search of a scary game that requires a lot of shooting and running from the bad guys, maybe you should stick with Resident Evil.
Review by James Nonamaker.
Isn’t this the face of Jesus that was on a burnt piece of toast? That Phoenix sure is an odd bird.
Highs
A different adventure game. Pretty scary if played with the lights off.
Lows
Internet sleuthing and reading endless text can get boring. No way of truly knowing if you are the right track.
Final Verdict
More or less a good game with some good concepts. Could be done just a little better but in the most part fun, especially if you’re bored with the same-old same-old murder mystery games.
