The technology tree is incredibly deep, branching off in several areas and containing hundreds if not thousands of levels of technology. The trade off is that some of the resulting technologies are broken or useless, rendering some of them no more useful 25 levels in than they were at level 1. They fixed many of them in patches, but still some things are completely useless. Missile technology I deem useless in its entirety, since ships equipped with them in my games seemed to be completely incapable of actually firing the missiles at an enemy despite meeting every requirement necessary for its execution.
Not even the tip of the tip of the iceburg.
With all of these unfortunate bugs and glitches in the game it simply cannot be recommended as it is. The company seems determined to fix all of the problems with patches, which seem to be churned out at a decent rate, but I would still wait a while yet before buying this game. Once they iron out the bugs then this game will truly shine as an amazing entry into the 4X genre but right now it is just another mediocre attempt.

Highs
Long, deep technology tree and an amazing amount of diplomacy options.
Lows
All of the depth inherent in-game seems to be a trade off for bugs, bugs and more bugs.
Final Verdict
Space Empires V would be an amazing game if it wasn't for the common crashing and other bugs.
