An interesting new twist on an old movie and a cliché idea.

I’m not the kind of person to let my preconceived notions get in the way of my feelings for something, and the same goes for videogames. However, I really had ideas in my head of how Jaws: Unleashed was going to be. I had done some snooping around on the web while my package was in transit to my office, most searching turned up some low scores and poor ratings. I wasn't expecting much. I found that I was pleasantly surprised, despite all those other reviews.

Nice to see they came up with some original artwork for the game.

The game is an interesting twist on an old movie and fairly cliché idea. A tyrannous animal torments the public by killing the locals and destroying property. Generally it’s up to one person, or groups of persons, to seek out and kill this animal. Most games usually cast you as the hero and it’s up to you to put a stop to this horrible creature. Well, not in Jaws: Unleashed . In this game you are the ravenous animal leaving a wake of destruction and a trail of dead bodies as you make your way through the main storyline of the movie(s).

Tearing down a pier and watching the people fall in the water, only to devour them, is supremely satisfying.

The story takes place on the island of Amity, where a fast growing population and economy has created an influx of large businesses. Unfortunately the fast growth of the population and industrial factories has attracted the attention of the most fearsome animal in the ocean; the Great White Shark. When the Environplus CEO’s son falls prey to your deadly attacks, the CEO hires famous shark hunter Cruz Ruddock to track and kill you. On the other hand you have a marine biologist named Michael Brody looking to capture you for research.

So pink and fleshy, I love humans for breakfast.

As Jaws you must track and kill divers and civilians as well as destroy piers, boats, and pretty much anything else that gets in your way. The graphics are fair and the gameplay is fun. In essence there’s not much else to do but kill as many people as you can while finding your way through the somewhat linear levels.

It’s so cute how these divers put up a fight, people are so silly.

Don’t get me wrong, this game won’t be winning Game of the Year, but it also shouldn’t be overlooked if you’re seeking something a little different. The shark is a bit hard to control while using the action camera view as well as playing in first person mode. If you place the camera to a static position behind the shark you have an easier time tracking and killing your prey.
