One really great thing about the game is the ability to use “shark vision”. This will blur the outside world and highlight any potential prey, making them easier to strike down with your powerful attacks. Tail whips and power moves make destroying diver cages and sinking boats much, much easier. The simple menus and even simpler controls mean this game has a very short learning curve, and if it weren’t for the M rating it would probably be an easy game for younger gamers to play.
Taking sport fishing to a whole new level.
The game has some serious fun points, but the problem is that there were some critical oversights during the development stages. Extremely repetitive sound clips such as “I don’t want to die” and “help me” can get old extremely fast. The game lacks the ability to change the difficulty settings and dying usually means starting right back at the beginning of the level while enduring the same cut scenes an endless amount of times.
“Say Pete, did you just hear a big splash?”
There isn’t much of a backstory, so if you’re not familiar with the movies you might not understand the importance of what you’re doing as you travel through the linear levels. One immensely frustrating feature was the fact that some missions require jumping out of the water to capture a scientist or civilian and drag them back into the sea. Well since Jaws doesn’t have feet or the ability to breathe air, that means getting back in the water after the 10 second timer runs out can prove fatal… over and over again.
Admit it, you can hear the theme music playing in your head when you see this.
Even with the short-comings, Jaws is somewhat playable. The movie settings are recreated accurately and they incorporate the movie plot well with the game. The time spent on the game doesn’t feel like a total waste and I don’t think that the game is getting the ratings it deserves. Although it’s not what most gamers would consider the greatest game ever made, it certainly provides a lot of entertainment if you can get over some of the more annoying aspects.
The graphics and scenery were more than I expected with this game.
If you are looking for some pointless destruction and the opportunity to eat some divers and terrorize the locals, then this is the game for you. If you’re looking for a solid plot with well developed characters then go rent the movie.
Review by James Nonamaker.
Games sure have come a long way in 20 years. This was the original Jaws on NES.
Highs
Decent graphics, okay controls and lots-o-mayhem.
Lows
You’d think that the most fearsome creature in the ocean wouldn’t be so easy to kill. Tedious missions, annoying voice acting and chasing the same divers over and over again can get old after a while.
Final Verdict
Far from an Editor’s Choice game, but it’s still fun just for the novelty of it all. Don't set your expectations too high and you won't be disappointed.
