Rainbow Six Vegas

All in all, I had a lot of difficulty deciding exactly how I felt about this game. Do I like it because it's not the horrible R6:Lockdown? Or do I dislike it because it's not the excellent Raven Shield? I'm conflicted, so I give half-way thumbs up to the single-player game and half-way thumbs-down to the arcade-like pace of the multiplayer mode. Rainbow Six: Vegas, the PC version, is not a bad game.

Mission accomplished!

But it's not a great one either. It's a straight port from the console version, so I can't imagine that it would be any more appealing on that platform to die-hard PC tactical shooter fans like me who disdain the use of a gamepad for this genre. I don't doubt that the next-gen console audience will probably think more highly of this game than I do.

But that's because Ubisoft, in my opinion, had the action crowd principally in mind when Vegas was on the drawing board. What of people like me who made the traditionally tactical, slower-moving, and more realistic Rainbow Six series an all-time classic starting way back in 1998? I hope I'm wrong, but if Vegas is an example of the future direction of tactical shooters - more action and fewer tactics - maybe it's time to scout out a long desolate patch of ice for that final stroll.

Highs
Rappelling; fast rope; new enviroments; A.I. uses profanity.

Lows
No "one shot kills" or wounded operatives; no multiple squads; no switching to a living squad mate; no prone position; A.I. uses profanity.

Final Verdict
Despite being more action-oriented than tactical, Vegas does have some memorable moments. But the franchise clearly appears to be shifting away from its traditional audience toward a more action-oriented mass market.
