The expansion to Battlefield 2142 will give fans of the game a lot to love.

For good games, expansions are like a way of prolonging the joy. Take the same storyline, concepts and characters from a game you like, add some new things to play with and extend the storyline enough to make it worth spending the additional $10 or $20 to buy the expansions and voila! You’ve got something to justify the cost of playing.

Battlefield 2142 may be one of those games where an expansion is worth the while. The popular online first person shooter from Electronic Arts and DICE did well enough for the company to put out a bonus pack called Northern Strike. As per the expansion formula, Northern Strike adds to the 2142 storyline, along with new units, new maps, new awards and unlocks and a new scenario to (hopefully) keep the action flowing across the battlefields of ice-locked future Europe. Today I’ll be breaking down the additions to see if they’re really worth the money EA wants you to spend on Northern Strike. Let’s dive in…

At the first chokepoint in front of the bridge at Remagen, waiting in a walker for the EU attack.

Storyline

Several years into the war fought out in Battlefield 2142 between the European Union (EU) and the Pan Asian Coalition (PAC), the PAC has driven the EU almost completely out of Europe. As conflict rages back and forth around the rim of the Mediterranean, the EU finds out that the PAC is starting to consolidate its holdings on the ice-locked continent, prospecting for the natural resources buried deep beneath the ice. Only a determined assault by the EU will drive their foes away from their new holdings and turn the tide of the war.

High in the Alps, the Port Bavaria Titan supply station is a lynchpin to PAC control of Europe.

Since there were only two places for this story to go after the incredible beating the EU received in the first game, I’m not surprised the designers chose to give the EU the opportunity for a counterattack. What isn’t exactly clear is why the PAC assault fizzled out when it did, giving the EU the opportunity to strike back. Is the PAC’s thirst for territory and resources sated? Did they overextend themselves? Given the loose adherence to story in the first game (and its popularity) I have a feeling most people won’t care, but if you thought EA would make the story a more important element of Northern Strike, you’ll be disappointed.

Darkness provides cover as the EU assaults the PAC stronghold in Leipzig.
