Making History: the Calm & the Storm

Now, I'm no dummy. I have an understanding of WWII that exceeds most of my friends and colleagues. So understanding the in's and out's of the war (beyond the actual military engagements) is something that I have spent endless hours studying and becoming familiar with. While taking pride in the vast array of information swarming in my mind, Making History blew me away with its complexity (leaving me feeling quite stupid).

The number of different variables that go in to the decision making process for each turn of this game is astounding. Luckily for Strategy First, the majority of gamers that enjoy this kind of game are much older than myself. This certainly isn't a game that is going to appeal to young or casual gamers. Without a real understanding of war and strategy games, I think that most people would be hopelessly lost in a game as deep as this.

A beautiful view of The United Kingdom during The Battle of Britain. Some wonderful eye candy.

Although this game might be lost on the more casual crowd, but for those people who are hungry for something more than just a 'move the army from point to point' game this is a very pleasurable experience. Although the option to play online is a nice addition, finding an available server can prove to be challenging. With a game that is as great as this and based upon making decisions and submitting an "end turn" action, I believe this game would have greatly benefited from an option to play via email.

Boom! Forces clash in one of the most epic wars of all time.

Since each action could take up to an hour to finalize, emailing that move to a player and receiving one a day later could have really been great. Such as the way that chess players once did with snail mail and a game board at each player's house. Perhaps in an update or different game? Do you hear that Strategy First?

A view of the fantastic chaos that occurs during entire global conflict.

Highs
Beautifully rendered game; sweet interface; lots of options and fantastic historical accuracy.

Lows
Extremely high learning curve; long tutorial with no voice acting; deep knowledge of economics and diplomacy that is required might push away more casual crowd.

Final Verdict
This game could help give people a better understanding of just how fragile the eco system of war is, giving them a sense of realism that is not found in most other strategy games. Unfortunately it's that same level of realism that might make this game unplayable for other gamers.
