With a title that long, it’s almost preposterous to say that it isn’t a great game. Hell, with the words “cool”, “attractive”, and “free”, Telltale Games and Videlectrix had an excellent title on their side. Well, perhaps the marketing team had a fit that nobody would remember it fully, or even partially, but Strong Bad 2 works well enough.

 

 

Strong Badia the Free follows everyone’s favorite HomeStarRunner character Strong Bad, the masked fleshy bag of grade-A awesome, on his adventure to removing The King of Town from power to end an email tax placed upon the citizens. Without ruining the comical plot entirely, Strong Bad’s aim is to invade The King of Town’s castle, protected by the Poopsmith (if you don’t already know…), to end his reign of tyranny. 

Through that adventure, the Sam & Max/Holmes-ian gameplay falls right in line with Telltale’s style, making sure that every little hint is exactly where it needs to be for the alert player to recognize. Everything in Strong Badia the Free is based around solving little puzzles, such as how to get a sword, find body parts, understand a foreign language…the list goes on, and only gets weirder.

 

 

Those things make the game an attractive and cool catch. Not only is it a puzzle game that aims for players to “think outside the box”, it also has genuine humor that anyone can understand and appreciate. Albeit players won’t laugh out loud more than once or twice, but the comical nature and absurdity of the dialog and actions means it’s more than just a game. It’s good entertainment. 

Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People Episode 2: Strong Badia the Free is a fun 3-5 hours of gameplay that will push players to solve puzzles, and constantly reward them for everything they do. Every person spoken to, every object touched or burned or hit, every scrap of secret items found, is a reward. And that’s what this game is, a reward. If only more things for $8.95 were as rewarding.
