Adventure fans should be happy with what Pharaoh's Curse delivers, and for $20, you’ll get a solid game for a good price.
The Cameron Files: Pharaoh’s Curse is an adventure game from DreamCatcher and The Adventure Company. You take on the role of Mr. Cameron, an investigator, who was hired by a woman named Moira.
Moira was part of an excavation project in Egypt, where some suspicious events began to take place. It’s up to you to use the clues to find Moira and uncover any mysteries along the way.
As an adventure game, you will need to do a lot of interaction with clues. You’ll be able to put some clues together to be used as solutions to puzzles, as well as simply finding keys, opening crates, etc. Fortunately, this game has a very easy-to-use interface. All actions are done with the mouse.
When you put your mouse over an object that can be interacted with, the cursor will have a specific icon that lets you know if you need to use an inventory item or if you can take the item with you. You can then perform the interaction by clicking the left mouse button.
The right mouse button is used to open your inventory. As you move throughout the game, you’ll keep certain items within your inventory, such as keys, talismans, and any other tools that may be useful.
You can also access a diary, which keeps an account of all the cut-scenes you’ve witnessed – you can replay any of them by clicking on its photo. There is also a wallet in your inventory that holds vital information on names, symbols, etc.
The balancing of clues and adventure is pretty solid here. Not all the clues are obvious or intuitive, but if you’re a fan of adventure games, you most certainly will have the patience to explore the areas and figure out what to do next. There are also some timed events that you must complete, otherwise your game is over - luckily you can save your game at any time to avoid having to replay a large chunk of the game.
There are a handful of areas in the game. The areas look like 360 degree screenshots and you can rotate your view all around to look for clues. You move by putting your mouse in a direction and clicking the left mouse button.
At certain points throughout the game, your adventuring will be broken up by cut-scenes, showing Mr. Cameron interacting with other characters to move the story along. The voice actors for each character do a great job here. There’s nothing phony or stiff about their performances.
They seem very comfortable and really help give some reality to the characters. The dialogue itself is amusing too, which helps keep the game from getting stale. That, combined with a fairly good pacing of adventure and story progression, keep the game from becoming tiresome.
Adventure fans should be happy with what Pharaoh’s Curse delivers, and for $20, you’ll get a solid game for a good price.
