OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast

Relive the 1980's as SEGA remakes its classic arcade-racer, OutRun, for the PC. But does it make you long for days past or just make you feel glad we’re in the 21st century?

Imagine cruisin’ down the highway, in your bright red or yellow Ferrari, with you super-hot swimsuit model girlfriend along for the ride, and not a care in the world. While a reality like this is probably not possible for most of us, SEGA gives us a chance to play out our fantasies in OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, and arcade racing game along the likes of well, OutRun 2. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s another sad attempt by a game developer to trick everyone into dropping their hard earned cash on that fancy new racing game that was in reality released two years ago (see: OutRun 2). But does SEGA add enough to convince gamers to run out and buy this game again? Not really. But if you’ve never played OutRun before, you might find something here you like.

The premise behind OutRun 2006 is simple. Take a high-powered Ferrari out for a spin on some of the games 30 tracks, and get to the checkpoints before time runs out, while simultaneously trying to avoid rival cars and impress your girlfriend, who’s along for the ride. The choices provided by OutRun 2006 are quite limited. There is no tweaking of your car’s setup. Oh wait, I forgot. You can change the car’s color! Whoopee! But that’s forgivable; this is an arcade game after all, not a Gran Turismo-like simulation.

During the races themselves, you are given choices at the end of each track as to which track to load next, without ever having to leave the race itself, which I would like to see other racing games do. You have a couple of different gameplay modes, from the standard Time Attack in which you compete against ghost cars to try and get the best time, to OutRun mode, which is the exact same thing as Time Attack, only now there are rival cars and AI traffic to contend with.
