OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast

OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast attempts to re-capture the spirit and charm of its 1980’s arcade-racer namesake. Does it? Well, yes and no. The game is simple and very easy to pick-up-and-play. The graphics are awesome. You’ll either rock out and sing along with the music or scramble to turn the volume all the way down. The online play is laggy and the interface could use some changes. Bottom line, though, is that this is essentially the same game as OutRun 2, which was released two years ago, only with a few extras thrown in. The PC version is also a straight port of the console versions, released a couple of months ago, so nothing new is here for those hoping for something extra.

Highs
Visually stunning graphics, especially on higher-end PC’s; gameplay that is very easy to pick up and play and succeed at; the AI traffic actually use their turn signals (how cool is that?); race setup lets you choose which track to race next, without ever leaving the race.

Lows
Not a whole lot of variety amongst the games different modes; rival AI can be annoying when hit and use ‘rubber-band’ logic; lag online is horrible; back of the game box lies about online features.

Final Verdict
If you were a huge fan of OutRun back in the ‘80s or are just looking for a quick arcade fix, you should at least give OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast a look, although you probably want to rent instead of buy. If you already own OutRun 2 or OutRun 2006 for the consoles, there is no reason to pick up this version.
